The Hook is a crucial basic footwork move to learn because it is used in many footwork moves you will learn later. Similar to a Monkey Swing, The Hook will teach you how to shift your weight from one side to another so you can switch sides or change the direction of your footwork. It also teaches you how to shift your weight in order for you to be able to swing your leg.

Tips for the basic breakdance footwork move the “Hook":

  • Make sure you push to the other arm and swing your leg to the front at the same time to give room for your leg to travel to the front
  • Squeeze the ankle of the leg that you are sitting on with the back of the straight leg to perform the hook
  • Stay on your toe and still sit on your heel, don’t drop to a flat foot
  • Make sure that the leg that is out comes back to a neutral position on your toes and sitting on heels and not flat footed
  • To swing to a hook without starting with your hand on the ground, place your weight on the opposite leg that you are not swinging
